Maya was 2 years old when her mother died. Her step mother did not take kindly to the presence of Maya and her 3 sisters. She beat them mercilessly and so her father left them at their maternal grandparent’s house. Life became hard for Maya and her sisters as their grandparents were too poor to support them. They started begging in their village. Maya who is now ten years old came to Noida along with her grandparents and her three sisters to make a living for herself and her family. They thought that coming to the city would be more profitable and life would be easier for her, her three sisters and her grandparents. The whole family took to begging on the city streets. Their daily income was Rs. 100 and the six of them managed as best as they could on this meager amount. One day when she was cutting wood for her grandmother to cook food. she hurt herself with a wire which was attached to the wood and injured her right eye. She went to a nearby village, Nithari, seeking medical help. The villagers there told her about ICARE Eye Hospital and directed her there. She came to ICARE and was immediately given special attention. She was diagnosed as having a Corneal Tear with superadded infection and surgery was recommended. She was operated on the same day and given antibiotics to stop the infection. The surgery and post- operative care was all free as was her stay and meals at the hospital. She recovered well and is now back with her family.
