Akhil’s Vision Restored

Akhil Khan belonging to village Punhana, Nuh, District Mewat, Haryana came with a history of defective vision left eye more than right eye since one year. He was currently studying in third class in government school. His parents were upset because of the fact that he was not doing well in studies and had failed in the examination. After repeated questioning from the child, the parents came to know that he was unable to look at the black board clearly. On retrospect the parents realized that his movements in his house was not normal as compared to other children of his age group as well he was avoiding to go out to play games with other children.

The parent suspected that he has an eye problem and he was brought to our rural peripheral center in Punhana, Mewat. On examination his vision was 6/36 part in the right eye and 6/60 in left eye.

He was brought to the hospital in our outreach van and thorough examination at ICARE was done and he was diagnosed as having immature cataract in both the eyes – presumably of genetic origin. After examination he was operated on the right eye on the 17th Sept,2014. His father had an urgent work and wanted to take the child back home with a promise of bringing him back for the other eye operation. He got readmitted on the 10th Oct, 2014 and was operated in the left eye on 14th Oct,2014. His unaided vision on discharge on the 15th Oct, 2014 was 6/12 in the right eye and 6/9 in the right eye. His family was very happy that the child could again lead a normal life and resume his schooling to study further.
