Reena lives with her husband Naresh in the Khora slum colony of Delhi. They shifted to Khora 5-6 years ago from their hometown Meerut in search of better opportunities. Both of them worked in a factory in Delhi, however Reena stopped working when she was expecting her first child. Immediately post the birth of her child, Reena was diagnosed with diabetes which started affecting her daily activities. Reena developed cataract in her eyes and soon she realized she could not see at all. She was unable to take care of her small daughter and had to leave her daughter with her parents in the village. Naresh was now the only earning member of the family earning around ~Rs. 7,000 per month.

Reena’s condition was identified by one of ICARE’s community health workers working in Khora Vision Center. Reena was diagnosed as having cataract and brought to ICARE Eye Hospital in Noida. Post the cataract operation, Reena can now see clearly with the eye which had lost most of its vision. She is very happy that she can see her daughter whom she had not been able to see properly since her birth. She also plans to get her other eye operated soon so that she can go back to work.
